What Is Flavored Coffee? How We Flavor Our Beans Naturally
Flavored coffee gets a bad reputation — and most of the time, that reputation is earned. Artificial syrups, chemical coatings, low-grade beans dressed up to hide their flaws. But natural flavored coffee, made from quality fresh-roasted beans with real flavor oils, is a completely different experience. Here's how ours works.
How Flavored Coffee Is Made
Coffee beans are flavored after roasting, not before. Once beans come out of the roaster and cool, natural flavor oils are applied and allowed to absorb into the bean. The oils bind to the surface of the bean and infuse throughout as the coffee rests.
At Passport, we use natural flavor oils — derived from real food sources — on our fresh air-roasted beans. The base coffee is the same quality we use across our entire lineup. Flavoring is an addition, not a cover-up.
Natural vs. Artificial Flavoring: What's the Difference?
Natural flavors are derived from actual food sources — vanilla extract comes from vanilla beans, hazelnut flavor from hazelnuts, cinnamon from cinnamon bark. They're more nuanced and less sharp than artificial alternatives.
Artificial flavors are synthesized in a lab to mimic natural flavors. They're often more intense but can taste sharp, chemical, or "fake" compared to natural counterparts.
All Passport flavored coffees use natural flavorings only.
Common Questions About Flavored Coffee
Is flavored coffee gluten-free?
Yes — our flavored coffees do not contain gluten. The natural flavor oils used are free from wheat, barley, and rye derivatives.
Does flavored coffee contain calories or sugar?
No. The flavor oils used to flavor coffee beans add negligible calories and no sugar. Brewed flavored coffee is still essentially calorie-free without milk or sweetener.
Is flavored coffee "real" coffee?
Absolutely. Flavored coffee starts with the same real coffee beans as any unflavored coffee. The bean is still sourced, roasted, and ground the same way — the only difference is the natural flavor oils applied after roasting.
Does flavored coffee taste artificial or overwhelming?
With quality beans and natural flavors, no. The flavor complements the natural taste of the coffee rather than overwhelming it. You should still taste the coffee itself — the flavor is an enhancement, not a replacement.
Should I use flavored coffee in an espresso machine?
You can, but note that flavor oils can build up on grinder burrs over time. If you use a high-end espresso grinder, you may prefer to use flavored coffee in a French press, drip maker, or AeroPress to preserve your burrs.
