Guide to Single Origin Coffee: Regions, Flavors & What to Expect

Single origin coffee is exactly what it sounds like — coffee sourced from one specific farm, region, or country rather than blended with beans from multiple origins. At Passport Coffee Shop, we've been sourcing single-origin coffees from the world's finest growing regions since 1983. Here's everything you need to know to choose yours.

Single Origin vs. Blends: What's the Difference?

Single origin coffees highlight the unique flavor characteristics of one specific place. The soil, altitude, rainfall, and processing method of that region all show up in the cup. No two origins taste alike.

Blends combine beans from two or more origins to achieve balance, consistency, and complexity. Our artisan blends are crafted to complement each other — creating a result that's greater than the sum of its parts.

Neither is better — they're different experiences. Single origins reward curiosity. Blends reward consistency.

Coffee-Growing Regions & What They Taste Like

Africa

Ethiopia — the birthplace of coffee. Ethiopian coffees are celebrated for their complexity: bright citrus and bergamot notes, vibrant floral aromatics, and a tea-like lightness. Yirgacheffe is particularly famous for its jasmine and lemon character. Shop Ethiopia →

Tanzania — complex and wine-like. Our Tanzania Peaberry is a small, round bean that roasts especially evenly, producing a bright, full-flavored cup with fruity undertones. Shop Tanzania →

Latin America

Colombia — smooth and approachable. Colombian coffees from high-altitude regions like Huila offer rich chocolate and nut notes with bright but balanced acidity. One of the most widely loved single origins in the world. Shop Colombia →

Asia-Pacific

Sumatra — earthy, full-bodied, and bold. Indonesian coffees processed using the wet-hulling method develop a distinctive deep, herbal, low-acid character. Our Sumatra Gayo Mountain is sustainably grown at high altitude. Shop Sumatra →

How Air Roasting Enhances Single Origins

Every single-origin coffee we sell is air-roasted — using hot air instead of a metal drum. This even, precise process highlights the natural character of each bean rather than masking it with roast bitterness. The citrus notes of an Ethiopian stay bright. The chocolate in a Colombian stays clean. The earthiness of a Sumatra stays true.
