Everything You Need to Know About Green Tea:  A Guide from Passport Coffee & Tea

Green tea is one of the world’s most beloved beverages, known for its delicate flavor, rich history, and health-promoting compounds. Whether you’re new to green tea or a seasoned aficionado, there’s always something fascinating to explore in each cup. At Passport Coffee & Tea, we take pride in offering a wide selection of premium green teas sourced and blended for taste, quality, and enjoyment.

🌱 What Is Green Tea?

Green tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, just like black and oolong teas. What sets green tea apart is its minimal oxidation during processing. This helps preserve natural antioxidants like catechins, especially EGCG,  along with fine flavor notes that range from grassy and vegetal to floral and sweet.

Green tea is cherished worldwide not only for its calming yet uplifting nature, but also for its versatility. It can be brewed hot, iced, or even blended into creative flavored teas.

Tea- Different Grades and What They Mean

Tea grading can be confusing, but here are simple ways to think about quality levels:

Standard Loose Leaf (Chunmee, Gunpowder)

These are whole or partial leaves with good flavor and balanced character. They provide excellent aroma, clear liquor, and true green tea experience, not just bitter tannins. Many green teas from Passport Coffee & Tea, like Sencha-based blends or Chunmee, fall into this category.

Specialty Grades (Matcha, Premium Sencha)

Higher grades of tea leaves are more uniform, tender, and flavorful. Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from shaded leaves. This tea has a vibrant color, smooth finish, and rich umami taste.

Flavored & Blended Teas

Many green teas are blended with fruits, flowers, or herbs. These aren’t lower quality...they’re simply crafted for flavor complexity. Examples like Blackberry Goji Green Tea and Hibiscus Green Tea bring bright fruit and floral profiles that make green tea fun and refreshing.

 Popular Varieties

Here’s a tasting journey through some great green tea styles you’ll find at Passport:

🌿 Sencha-Based Teas

Sencha is one of the most popular green teas globally. It is  fresh, green, sometimes slightly sweet which pairs beautifully with botanicals like citrus or berries. Many of the green blends in our catalog start with Sencha as their base.

🌸 Floral & Fruit-Infused Greens

Blends like Blackberry Goji or Butterfly Lavender combine green tea with flowers and fruit for an aromatic taste. The flavors will layer nicely in the cup perfect when you want something lighter or iced.

🍵 Matcha

Matcha is powdered green tea traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. It’s whisked with hot water for a creamy, frothy experience and is rich in antioxidants. Strong earthy taste, pairs well with milk if you're looking for a smooth, tasty milk tea.

🍃 Classic Leaf Varieties

Chunmee, Gunpowder, and similar green leaf teas offer unique flavor profiles, which can range from bold and slightly smoky to smooth and vegetal. These are excellent for those who love uncomplicated, classic green tea.

Brewing Tips for the Perfect Cup

Green tea is delicate! The wrong temperature can make it bitter. Here’s a guide for the perfect cup:

🍵 Water Temp: ~170–180°F (not boiling)

🫖 Tea Amount: ~1–2 teaspoons per 8–10 oz water

⏱️ Steep Time: 2–3 minutes for hot tea

For iced tea, brew at the same temperature with double the tea leaves and pour over ice immediately. Storing loose leaf tea in airtight canisters away from light and moisture preserves freshness.

 Health Highlights

While not a replacement for medical advice, many people enjoy green tea because:

  • It's rich in antioxidants that may support cell health and reduce oxidative stress.
  • Compounds like L-theanine promote calm focus.
  • Some studies show green tea may support metabolism and cardiovascular health.
  • A naturally low-calorie and caffeine-balanced option compared to coffee.

Just remember, even beneficial beverages are best enjoyed in moderation.

Whether you’re exploring classic green tea or discovering fruit-infused blends, green tea offers a world of flavor and wellness with every cup. At Passport Coffee & Tea, we’re passionate about helping you find a green tea that fits your taste and lifestyle, from everyday comfort to special seasonal favorites.
